Hello, welcome to the What the Kids Want webpage!
*We are now all living in different cities: Christopher is in San Francisco, Ali is in Pittsburgh, and Jrd is holding it down in Bloomington. This makes it a little harder for us to get together to play shows. But we are making it happen.
*We are a three-piece band from Bloomington, Indiana. It's very hard to describe your own music, but I guess I would say that we play pop punk, but we try to make it original and fun, and it usually ends up kind of sloppy. A lot of our songs are fast punk songs, but lately a lot of them are slower and quieter, too, which, surprisingly, we are usually better at playing. We try to be as energetic and as catchy as possible. Our band uses guitar, bass and drums, and I sing mostly but Jrd and Christopher sing on some songs too. Our songs are about lots of different things, I guess mostly the lyrics are very personal, but sometimes political and sometimes just fun. Our style becomes increasingly more alternative rock with each new song. Sara D. says that each song is better than the last one. But you never know. I hope that gives you an idea of what we're about.
*One
or more of us have been in the following bands: The Diaries, The Gay Planets,
The Hussies, The Lame Ducks, MC Honda Civic and MC SanFranChrisCompany, The
Jocks, The Sissies, Spin the Bottle, xbxrx, more...
History
2002: During the summer, Jrd and I decided that we wanted to start a new band. I'd been writing some new songs, but hadn't been playing music with anyone for awhile, so Jrd and I started practicing and learning a few songs. Then in the fall, Christopher moved to Bloomington from San Francisco, so we asked him to play bass for us! We played our first show on October 11 at the Bottom of the Hill in Bloomington. We recorded our first 7", "Inside Jokes Explained," in December, then started a label called Talking Dog Records to release it.
2003: The record came out in March, and then we did a month-long tour of the east coast and the south. Then in the summer we finally got this webpage together! Later in the year we did a small tour of the midwest and a very long tour of the west coast and everywhere in between.
2004: In February we recorder our first full-length album, and our friends released it on their label Smack Dab in the Middle Records. It's called "Loud Quiet Loud," and it came out in March. Summer found us on an insane month-long tour selling books at the Warped Tour during the day for Boxcar Books, and playing shows at night in the same cities, driving a lot and barely sleeping. Then Jrd went to college, and we ended up somehow going to Florida over and over again for week-long tours. Hopefully that phase in our band is over!
2005: In March, we released a split 7" record with an amazing band called Dear Nora, on Shake Got the Beets Records. In September, we went on a tour of the west-coast with Madeline. Then, in October, Christopher moved to San Francisco.
2006: In April, we got together and recorded four new songs and played a show in Bloomington, and in July we played at Plan-it-X Fest 2006. Ali moved to Pittsburgh in August.
2007: In January we played a few shows in California.
2008: In February we toured in Japan! The four songs that we recorded in 2006 were released as the "Hold the Beat" single on the Japanese record label Underground Government.
